Ireane/Irene Nicholls was born about 1818 in Green Township, Harrison Co, OH, a daughter of Thomas H. Nicholls and Rachel Dowden. They soon moved to Island Creek Township, in Jefferson Co, OH where her mother Rachel died in 1830. Her father remarried Catherine Rose in 1834. He died in 1838. In the 1850 Census, Irene was found living with her sister Cassandra Nicholls Barcus's family at the age of 31.
The next year, Irene married a widower Jacob Grafton on January 23, 1851 in Jefferson County, OH, and they moved to New Cumberland, Hancock Co, VA soon after. Here they had one son John Ross Grafton, born in 1853. Irene died sometime after the birth of her son (between 1853 and 1859), Her husband Jacob remarried in 1859 to his 3rd wife, Ann Breen.
I am unsure where Irene was buried, but I have placed her here in this cemetery as there are several others of the Grafton family buried here, and she was probably living in this area at the time of her death (between 1853 and 1859)
