BUTLER: ALBERT LELAND, "AL" HITCHMAN passed away Friday morning, October 8, 2010 in Hospice of North Central Ohio's Hospice House.


Al was born in Butler on July 3, 1927 to Albert and Bessie (Freed) Hitchman and graduated from Butler High School. Following graduation, Al served in the Army during WWII. On September 21, 1947, he married Frances "Frankie" Wareham, the two raised their children in Butler.


In June of 1957 Al purchased what is now Hitchman's Market, located on Liberty Street in Butler. In 1975 a new building was designed and constructed. The family contines to operate the store today. Al never really retired, he was always available to lend a helping hand.

Al enjoyed nature, liked the outdoors, and spent time hunting small game such as squirrel and rabbit. He tended to his garden and had a knack of carpentry. In his spare time Al played golf at local courses.


He was a member of the American Legion Post #535, and attended Three Crosses, a United Methodist Fellowship.


Al is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Frances "Frankie" Hitchman of Butler, children and their spouses. Jerry and Lee Ann Hitchman and Terry and Tammy Hitchman, both of Butler, daughter and son-in-law, Jo Dee and Kim Derr of Lakeville, grandchildren, Aaron (Savannah) Hitchman, Alexis, Ashley, Ben, Sara and Sadie Hitchman, and Kellie and Brian Derr, sisters, Roxanne McCauley, Connie Workman and Julia Sorquist, sister-in-law, Eleanora "Ellie" Hitchman, brothers-in-law, Hal (Bonnie) Wareham and Russell "Buzz" (Joan) Wareham.


Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his daughter, Lora Lin Hitchman in 1972, brothers, Richard and James Hitchman, half-sisters, Majorie Hassinger, Marian Gatton, Helen Hess, Evelyn Divelbiss and Gus Teeter.


The Hitchman family will receive friends Sunday October 10, 2010 from 2-5 p.m. in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home where the funeral services will be Monday at 11 a.m. Pastors Don Earlenbaugh and Keith McLaughlin will officiate. Burial with Military Honors conducted by the American Legion Post #535 and will follow in the Zion Four Corners Cemetery. Memorial contributions to the Worthington Township/Butler Rescue Squad or Hospice of North Central Ohio may be made at the funeral home.
