She was born September 8, 1906 in Butler to Albert Hitchman, Sr. and Jesse Lewis Hitchman, and was graduated from Butler High School in 1925. She attained her teaching certificate from the Richland County Normal School, and later earned her bachelors degree from Ashland University.
Evelyn taught in a one-room schoolhouse near Butler, and later in the Shelby School District.
A lifelong Mansfield area resident, she was a member of First United Methodist Church, Mansfield, where she held many leadership roles in the United Methodist Women, taught Sunday school and took an active leadership role in service projects.
She was a Priscillan Club member and a member of the Richland County Nature Club.
Evelyn and her husband Charles were members of the Richland County Beekeepers Association, as well as of regional and national beekeeping associations. They attended numerous international beekeeping conventions (Apimondias), and traveled to many foreign countries, furthering the study and encouraging the growth of beekeeping.
Evelyn's many interests included both the household arts, especially cooking and needlework, and nature. She and Charles were hobbyist beekeepers who presented programs on bees and pollination to scores of school classes in northern Ohio.
She is survived by her daughter Mary E. Richards of Ames, Iowa; two sons and a daughter-in-law Charles F. Divelbiss of Johnstown and Richard I. and Beverly Divelbiss of Lansing, Michigan; eight grandchildren Ann Richards, Sarah Richards, Robin Richards, Shauna Keenan, Andrea McQueen, Sam O'Connor-Divelbiss, Peter O'Connor-Divelbiss and Ben O'Connor-Divelbiss; five great grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers-in-law Roxanne and Richard McCauley of Butler, Connie and Robert Workman of Ashland and Julia Sorquist of Butler; and a brother and two sisters-in-law Albert Hitchman, Jr. and Frankie Hitchman of Butler, and Ellie Hitchman of Butler and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years Charles A. Divelbiss on October 12, 1990; an infant son James Edwin Divelbiss; three sisters Helen Hess, Marian Gatton, Marjorie Hassinger and two brothers Jim Hitchman and Richard Hitchman.
The family will receive friends Friday, February 13, 2004 from 5-7 p.m. in First United Methodist Church, North Diamond Street at Park Avenue East, Mansfield. Visitation continues Saturday from 10 a.m. until 11 am in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home, where the funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. The Rev. Charles Tobias will officiate. Burial will follow in Bellville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorial contributions to First United Methodist Church of Mansfield, Hospice of North Central Ohio or Richland County Beekeepers may be made through the funeral home.
