The 1900 U.S. Federal Census places Isavilla "Icy" N. J. Connerly [Connelly] [abt age 16] in Bible Grove Township, Clay County, Illinois with her parents, James and Lelitia [Letitia] Connerly [Connelly]. There are five children listed: Pheoby [Phoebe] E., Isavilla N. J., Hariett L., Josiah O., and Gowd [Gould] Connerly [Connelly].

1903 - Icy V. N. J. Connelly and Ulysses G. Young were married November 1, 1903 in Toledo, Cumberland, Illinois by Aubrey L. Caseley, Minister of the Gospel. The marriage was witnessed by Elmer Creath and Mrs. A.L. Caseley.

1904 - Son, Raymond Young was born in Neoga, Cumberland, Illinois and died in 1904 in Neoga, Cumberland, Illinois; it is unknown where he is buried [Information taken from The Family Register].

We have a photo of Letitia Ann Smith Conley (MOTHER of Icy Young) with her daughter, Phoebe Estella Conley Hanks, her niece Alice Harriette Hanks, along with Gould Conley [brother of Icy]. This was not a good period for the Conley family. Icy's mother, Letitia Ann Smith Conley was committed to a state mental hospital, where she remained until her death on May 17, 1930 in Jacksonville, Morgan, Illinois, USA. The cause of her death was cancer of the brain. She is buried in the Neoga Memorial Cemetery, Neoga, Cumberland, Illinois next to her daughter Icy Young.

The 1910 U.S. Federal Census tells us Icy Young [abt age 26] was living on Toledo Road, Neoga, Cumberland, Illinois with her husband, Grant Young, along with two of her children: Dorothy and Ruby Young. We also learn that Icy is able to read and write.

ICY J. YOUNG

Mrs. Icy J. Young, 90, formerly of Neoga, Ill., died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday at her daughter's home, Mrs. William (Ruby) Checkley, 217 S. West Blvd., with whom she had made her home since 1968.

She was born April 10, 1884, in Clay County, Ill., and married Grant U. Young Nov. 1, 1903. He died in 1935.

Surviving with Mrs. Checkley are two other daughters, Miss Mary Jane Young, and Mrs. Charles (Virginia) Ister, both of Elkhart: two sons, Grant Jr., Hindsboro, Ill., and Frank R.. [Young] Anna, Ill.: two grandchildren: a brother, Gould Conley, Cleburne, Texas.

The body will be taken to the Swengel-O'Dell Funeral Home, Neoga, Ill., for services Monday. Westbrook-Metz Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Funeral services were held on March 30, 1975 at 2:00 p.m. in the United Pentecostal Church, Neoga, Illinois officiated by the Rev. James Fletcher.

Phoebe Estella Conley married Thomas Price Hanks, Jr. 3 Jul 1906 in Effingham, Effingham, Illinois. He was about 58 years old and Phoebe was only 24 years old when they married. They had one child, Alice Harriette Hanks born 13 Jan 1909 in Neoga, Cumberland, Illinois. In April 1910, Gould Conley was living in his sister's household following the commitment of their mother, Letitia Ann Conley to the Kankakee State Hospital. When Phoebe became ill, Gould Conley moved west and by the 1920 U.S. Federal Census he was found in Ranger, Eastland, Texas, USA working in the oil fields. Phoebe died 8 Jul 1914 of tuberculosis in Neoga, Cumberland, Illinois, USA. Aunt Icy Young became a caring aunt for Alice, as she helped Thomas Price with her raising. Aunt Icy's children were considered siblings rather than cousins through out the life of Alice Harriette Hanks. This line of the Conley family remained very close until their deaths.

Bud was a farmer in Illinois and he and his wife, Charline Ellen Starwalt raised a son, Larry Grant Young. In 1922, Aunt Icy gave birth to a set of twins, Virginia Maxine "Ginny" and Virgil Dean Young. Virgil Dean died at three months and 6 days and Virginia lived to marry Charles Fredrick Ister and adopted a daughter.
