Ulysses Grant "Bud" Young, Jr. was born, the seventh child, on November 15, 1917 in Neoga, Cumberland, Illinois to Ulysses Grant and IcyVilla Nancy Jane Conley Young.

The 1920 U.S. Federal Census places Grant Young [abt age 2 Years 2 Months] in Neoga, Cumberland, Illinois with his parents, Grant and Icy Young. There are now five children in the household: Dorothy, Ruby, Frank, Mary J. and Grant Young (Jr.). Alice Hanks [age 10], a niece of Icy Young, is listed as a boarder in the family home. Alice lost her mother to death in 1914, when she was 5 or 6 years of age. Her father, Thomas Price Hanks, was 72 years old in 1920, so he needed help with her raising.

The 1930 U.S. Federal Census shows Grant Young [abt age 12] living in Neoga, Cumberland, Illinois with his parents, U Grant and Icy Young. Siblings in the household: Frank, Mary J., Grant and Virginia Young. Grant was attending school and he can read and write.

The 1940 U.S. Federal Census tells us that Bud [abt age 22] was still living with his mother on Locust Street in Neoga, Cumberland, Illinois. Bud's Highest Grade Completed is listed as 8th grade, and the census states he was working in a shoe factory. He lost his father to death on November 14, 1935.

Ulysses Grant Young married Charline Ellen Starwalt August 25, 1940 in Cape Girardeau, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, USA. The couple was blessed with one son, Larry Grant Young.

MATTOON - Ulysses Grant "Bud" Young, 85 of Mattoon, formerly of Hindsboro, died at 7:13 a.m. Thursday (Dec. 19, 2002) at Mattoon Health Care Center.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Apostolic Church of Mattoon with the Rev. Derold Doughty officiating. Burial will be in Humboldt Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the church. Taber Funeral Home in Oakland is in charge of the arrangements.

He was born Nov. 15, 1917, in Neoga, the son of Ulysses and Icyvilla Nancy Jane Conley Young. He married Charline Starwalt in 1940; she survives.

Also surviving are one son, Larry Young of Hindsboro, and one sister, Virginia Ister of Elkhart, Ind.

He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

Mr. Young was a farmer and member of the First Apostolic Church in Mattoon.

Memorials may be made to the First Apostolic Church or the Alzheimer's Association.
