Martha Ellen Lyda Hawkins, daughter of Hezekiah and Clarinda Swisher was born April 5, 1870 near Luray in Clark County, Missouri and died March 1, 1939 at her home near Luray.

She was converted and joined the Christian Church at the age of 14 years.

On January 15, 1893 she was united in marriage to Abraham Hawkins at the Methodist Protestant Church at Luray.

In the fall of 1906 under the ministry of Rev. E. M. Houchens, Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins joined the Methodist Protestant Church at Luray and have continued to be devoted Christians and loyal members of this church.

To this union were born six sons and one daughter. One son, Lawrence Hawkins and one daughter, Lucy May preceded her in death.

Those remaining are her husband, Abraham Hawkins, five sons, Royal, Arch and Will of Luray; Albert of Medill and Edgar of Oakland, California; four grandsons and four granddaughters and one great grandson.

One brother James Swisher of Memphis, Missouri, one sister, Ida Kelly of Fort Madison, Iowa. One brother, William preceded her in death.

Mrs. Hawkins spent nearly all of her life near Luray in Clark County, Missouri. For more than a year she has been in failing health and the last few weeks her loved ones could see that her earthly life was short.

All that her family and friends could do was done to lengthen her life and make her last days as comfortable as possible.

This marks the passing of one of Clark County’s devoted Christian mothers.

Her family and friends feel their loss very keenly yet realize that they are not sorrowing as those who have no hope, for this sister had a living faith in a living Savior.

The funeral service was conducted on Thursday afternoon, March 2, in the M. P. Church by the pastor assisted by Rev. Andrews of Wyaconda.

The pallbearers were Earl Carter, Will Carter, Remer Evans, Carl Sisson, Reta Phillips and Morris O’Brien.

A quartet consisting of Mrs. Otis Gutting, Miss Alice Parrott, Oval St. Clair, and Wallace Hardy sang “Jesus Lover of My Soul,” and “When the Roll is Called Up Yonder.” A solo by Roy Stevens, “When they Ring the Golden Bells.” Mrs. Roy Stevens was the pianist.

Burial was in the Combs Cemetery.
