Hester Ann Murray was the daughter of John Green Murray and Rachel Beverly. She married her first husband,William Arnold, in 1860, who died in the service of the CSA in Richmond VA 1862. She and William had a son, Johnny J. Arnold, born 1862. She then married John B. Norris April 29, 1869 in Pearsonville Georgia. John was a widower with several small children. They removed from Georgia to Florida in 1875 to a homestead on the Suwannee River called "Norris Shoals" where Hester practiced as a midwife/country doctor and raised their children. John and Hester had seven known children together, Isaac "Ike", Lucius, Belle, Francis "Frank", Thomas "Tom" Sylvester, Hiram "Hi" Barney and Henry Trimond "Trim" Norris. She was stepmother to Izabel, William, Betsy Ann, Martha J. and John A. Norris. Hester filed a Widow's Pension application in Columbia County in 1919 through the CSA service of William Arnold and was living with her son, Trim, his wife, Verlon and their two small children, in 1920 at Shalmanezer, Columbia County. She lived in Georgia throughout the Civil War, one of the darkest periods in American history, and lived to the age of 82 years. Hester Ann Murray Arnold Norris, and other women of the era, are an inspiration for their grit and determination to survive and endure. She will be remembered.
