Mrs. Mary Childs Baker Dies at 74; Ill 4 Weeks

Mrs. Mary Childs Baker, 74, a native Syracusan and widow of Howard S. Baker, Iowa telephone executive, died following a four weeks' illness early Thursday at the home of her son, John C. Baker of 14 Lynacre, Fayetteville. Until a month ago she had made her home at the James Apartments, 600 James Street.
Mrs. Baker was a member of a pioneer Syracuse family prominent in the early days of the salt industry. She was born in Syracuse on Dec. 13, 1866, a daughter of John H. and Amelia Burton Childs.
Following her marriage to Mr. Baker, a native of Lafayette, in 1883, she moved to Sioux City, Ia., where Mr. Baker was for many years head of the Sioux City Telephone Company. She returned to this city following his death in 1921.
Surviving are one son, John C. Baker; a grandson, Howard S. Baker; a sister, Mrs. Henry P. Warner of Syracuse, and a brother, Hamilton E. Childs of Pelham Manor.
Last rites will be conducted at her son's home at 10:45 A.M. Saturday by the Rev. Dr. Ray Freeman Jenney of Park Central Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
