Neal served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on C-47 #41-18573, 13th Troop Carrier Squadron, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Dougherty County, Georgia prior to the war.

He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on October 8, 1941, prior to the war, at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Teacher and also as Single, without dependents.

C-47 #41-18573 took off from Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands on a medical evacuation mission of 8 injured and/or ill soldiers to Efate Island, Shefa Province, Vanuatu. They never arrived at Efate and are assumed to have crashed at sea for an unknown reason.

Neal was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash.
