James served as a Corporal & Radio Operator on C-47 #41-18573, 13th Troop Carrier Squadron, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Warren County, Mississippi & was a member of the Mississippi National Guard prior to the war.

His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on November 25, 1940, prior to the war, from Vicksburg, Mississippi. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a stationary engineer and also as Single, without dependents.

C-47 #41-18573 took off from Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands on a medical evacuation mission of 8 injured and/or ill soldiers to Efate Island, Shefa Province, Vanuatu. They never arrived at Efate and are assumed to have crashed at sea for an unknown reason.

James was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash.
