He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on September 24, 1941, prior to the war, in Los Angeles, California. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Baker and also as Single, without dependents.

C-47 #41-18573 took off from Henderson Field, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands on a medical evacuation mission of 8 injured and/or ill soldiers to Efate Island, Shefa Province, Vanuatu. They never arrived at Efate and are assumed to have crashed at sea for an unknown reason.

Ralph was declared "Missing In Action" in this crash.
