The funeral of Mrs. Margaret Lynn Alford, 71, the first woman elected mayor in Louisiana, was held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church here, with the Rev. Eugene Kimble officiating. Burial was in Columbia Hill Cemetery under the direction of Riser and Son Funeral Home.
Mrs. Alford died Thursday at the Caldwell Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness.
She served as mayor of Columbia from 1953-57. She was a past governor of Quota International, 21st District, a retired school teacher and a member of the First United Methodist Church.
She was also active in the local organization for mental health, and took part in a compiling of gravesites in Caldwell Parish to form a book known as 'Caldwell Parish Garden of Memories.'
Survivors include her husband, Guy H. Alford; one son, Mecom H. Alford; one sister, Mrs. Julia Phillips of Baton Rouge and one granddaughter, Katherine Alford of Monroe.
