Virgil M. Smith, 85, died at 5:10 a.m. April 29, 2005, at St. Rita's Medical Center in Lima, Ohio.

He was born Feb. 16, 1920 in Bradner, Ohio to Benjamin L. and Maude S. Garner Smith, who preceded him in death. On Dec. 10, 1938, he married Rosa Burgher, who survives.

Mr. Smith had been a foreman at Ford Motor Co., Lima Engine Plant. He had also worked at Ohio Crankshaft, Cleveland, and Atlas Crankshaft, Fostoria, Ohio. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving under General George Patton. He returned home from the war to a ticker tape parade down 5th Avenue in New York City. He was a talanted pianist and loved sports, gardening and bicycling. He always exclaimed, "I was married in 1938 and I have a wonderful wife and cook!"

Survivors also include three sons, the Rev. Wayne (Mary) Smith of Benton, Ark., Jeffrey (Kathy) Smith of Findlay and Steven (Mischelle) Smith of Fort Jennings; two daughters, Sally (Richard) Hutchinson of Lima and Brenda Smith of Vaughnsville; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Gary Daniel Smith; four brothers, Richard, Herbert, David Paul and infant Ben Smith; three sisters Lucille Holcomb, Grace Alcorn and infant Emma Smith.

Services will begin at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hartman Sons Funeral Home, Columbus Grove. The Rev Don Hague will officiate. Burial will be in Bradner Cemetery, Bradner, Ohio with military rites.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
