William Stevens owned 288 acres of land approximately two miles north of his gravestone. He acquired it from Ferdinand Hopkins in 1835 and left it to his wife and fourteen children at his death. He also had property in Mississippi which he had purchased several months prior to his death in preparation of moving his family there. After his death, his wife, Sally Halsell Stevens, and 12 of his children made the move without him. (The two eldest girls were already married.)

His children were listed in court records as. Silas Stevens, George Stevens, Sarah Stevens Triplett, Thomas Stevens, David Stevens, Margaret Stevens Price, John Stevens, Alexander Stevens, Pizarro Stevens, Elizabeth Stevens, Mildred Stevens, Clark Stevens, Regina Stevens, and Walter Stevens.

The Stevens Cemetery is in the Sumter National Forest. It is east of the Woods Ferry Recreation Area on the Broad River. The cemetery contains around 10 graves. One is marked by a formal headstone to William Stevens. The remainder are identified by fieldstones and linear depressions. The cemetery is protected by the US Forest Service.
