The 14th was sent to the Camp of Instruction at Corinth in May 1861, was moved to Union City, Tennessee in August, by October of that year the regiment was at Bowling Green, Kentucky and later ordered to Fort Donelson.
On 16 February 1862 Pizarro was captured at the surrender of Fort Donelson and sent to the POW camp at Camp Douglas, Illinois. He was sent to Cairo, Illinois in an exchange of prisoners in September of that year. He was re-appointed 5th Sgt. at Clinton, Mississippi.
He served the remainder of the War in the battles fought by the 14th: Chickamauga, Atlanta, Spring Hill and Franklin. He was paroled at Marion, Alabama on 16 May 1865 along with the remnant of the 14th Mississippi.
He died at home after the War before 1870.
