William Stevens purchased land in Mississippi in 1852, returned home to South Carolina for the move west and died before the move could be made. His widow Sallie completed the move bringing her entire family to Mississippi with the exception of two daughters who were already married.
Alexander was the sixth son of the family. Of the nine boys, at least seven served in the Confederate Army. Alexander mustered in on 20 April 1861 at Plattsburg, Mississippi in Company F, Beauregard Rifles, 14th Mississipi Infantry. He died of fever the following November.
