Charles Norhood Mumford was born on August 2, 1816 in Leyden, Lewis County, New York- the son of Henry and Sarah Thompson Mumford. He was married to Miss. Clarissa Blackney on October 2, 1836. Clarissa was the daughter of Eldad and Sarah "Sally" Cross Blackney. Following is a transcription of their marriage record:

"Charles N. Mumford of Pomfret, and Clarissa Blackney of Perrysburgh- married on October 2, 1836 at the bride's parents, by Reverend Mr. Preston of Lodi, New York. Witnesses: Seley Blackney and Delia Blackney."

Charles N. and Clarissa Blackney Mumford went on to have nine, known children. By 1850 the family had migrated to Highland, Iowa County, Wisconsin, where they remained for only a short time. At that time they moved to Wauzeka, a small village not far from Prairie du Chien, Crawford County, Wisconsin. It was there that they would remain for nearly 30 years. It was from Wauzeka, Wisconsin that Charles would leave to serve in the Civil War- serving in Companies K and M, 3rd Wisconsin Calvary, along with his sons, Henry and Manley as well as his son-in-law, Jacob Lemons.

By 1880 the family had relocated to Lone Rock in Richland County, Wisconsin. It was there that Charles N. Mumford passed away on April 4, 1899. Clarissa Blackney Mumford would remain a widow until January 3, 1906, when she passed away at Spring Green in Sauk County, Wisconsin.
