Isaiah Benjamin Downs was born December 21, 1826 in Bryan County, Georgia the son of Barrett C. Downs and Sarah Ann Hickman Cox Downs, who were "pioneers of Bryan County." He had five siblings and was a carpenter. He was the great-great-grandson of Captain Sir Henry Downs and Lady Jane Douglas Downs of the Douglas Clan of Scotland. He was the great-grandson of Revolutionary War Adjutant Colonel William Downs, Sr.

Isaiah Benjamin Downs and his wife Mary Amelia Murrow Pate Downs (who is probably buried in Liberty Chapel Cemetery in Bryan County) had ten children: Eugenia Astoria Downs Gill, Emma E. Downs Thompson, Sarah Catherine Elizabeth Downs, Lawson Bascon Downs, Rev. John Barrett Downs, Mary Amantha Downs Bradley, Anna Caroline Downs Bradley, Albert Walker Smith Downs, Aloyd Downs, and Elizabeth Downs. Isaiah was the second husband of Mary Amelia Murrow Pate Downs. His two step-children were Edna Josephine Pate Downs and William James Pate. His step-daughter, Edna Josephine Pate Downs, married his younger brother, Emmett Thomas Downs.

Isaiah died of pneumonia in Bryan County at age 40 on July 10, 1867 and was buried the next day in Laurel Grove Cemetery in Savannah, Chatham County, Georgia. The cemetery database indicates the burial occurred in Section C9. Unfortunately this section designation was abandoned many years ago, and the cemetery officials do not know what area includes Section C9.

Isaiah's ancestry was Scots and English. The colonial blacksmith shop and tools on his land later were sold to Henry Ford and moved to Michigan. I hope one of his descendants will add his photo to this site.
