Sarah Ann Hickman Downs was born March 21, 1807 in Effingham County, Georgia, the daughter of Jesse Hickman and Mary Royall Hickman. She married her first husband, Spencer Cox, in about 1823, and they became the parents of Emanuel Cox. On January 20, 1825 she married Barrett C. Downs in Bryan County, Georgia, and they became the parents of six children: Isaiah Benjamin Downs, Mary Elizabeth Downs Hagan, William Barrett Downs, Emmett Thomas Downs, Caroline Rebecca Downs Milton, and Georgia Ann Downs, all born in Bryan County. Sarah and Barrett were "pioneers of Bryan County." Her ancestry was Scots and English.
Sarah died at age 65 on April 4, 1872 and is probably buried in the Little Creek area of Bryan County.
