William J. Willis was born around 1805 in the Spartanburg District of South Carolina. William and a number of other families moved to Fayette County, Alabama in the middle 1830s. He and his first wife, Judah Collins Willis, had six children - five girls and a son [Unknown daughter, Jabez Gaut Willis who died in Tennessee during the Civil War, Martha, Sarah, Eady Caroline and Anna. Judah died [date unknown] and he eventually married his wife's sister, Amy Edith Collins. William and Amy had one son, James Franklin, in 1853. Family tradition places William's grave site just to the right of the family plot [as you stand in front of the newly added gravestone] According to family tradition, Judah is also buried in that same area.
