The Closing Of An Eventful Life

"The Sacramento Union of last Saturday contained an interesting life history of Nathan Hawk, the El Dorado County Pioneer, the Mexican War Veteran and original Pony express who died on Wednesday at the Soldiers Home in Napa County. He was born in Indiana in 1823 and at the time of his death was 87 years of age.

In July, 1846, he enlisted in his native state under Col Allen and his regiment was soon assigned to duty in what is now the Southern part of the state of California, but was then Mexican Territory. Soon after their arrival on the coast, five companies were mustered out in Los Angeles, his among the number. Hawk contracted to take East with him several copies of the first paper to be published in California, The California Star, which set forth in a boom addition, the conditions in the West. It was he who took to his Eastern home the first information of the discovery of gold near Coloma, the town where he afterward lived and where, as a fitting close to his life, his body was laid to rest last Saturday. Rev. E. E. Clark, of this city (Placerville) officiated at the funeral.

Mr. Hawk is survived by two sons and two daughters, William H. Hawk of Sacramento, Mary A. Avery of Roseville (Placer County, CA) and John and Ella Hawk of Coloma."
