Sarah Hawk was born the daughter of William Hawk and Margaret Harris Hawk. Her father and mother were early members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and suffered the hardships of moving from place to place to escape the persecution in Missouri and Illinois. After leaving to travel west with the pioneers, her father joined the Mormon Battalion and the family stayed at Council Bluffs, Iowa, while he was gone. When he returned to Iowa to take his family to the Salt Lake Valley, Sarah's mother Margaret was killed at Ash Hollow, Nebraska, when the cattle of the company stampeded.
Sarah married John Aylor Mikesell March 27, 1852, and he died in 1858. She had two children, Lydia Catherine Mikesell, born 1854 and David Crockett Mikesell, born 1856.
In her father's will, she is named as Sarah Maxwell. On her death certificate it gives her name as Sarah Mixwell. On the burial certification from the Salt Lake Cemetery, it has her name as Sarah Maxwell, so that is the name she is listed on this record.
There is no marker at her grave.
