--Son of Thomas H. Roberts & his first wife Jane Grice.
--He had a twin sister, Faye.
--Rev. Fred Craig Roberts had not finished his formal education, and was working in a hosiery mill to support his family when he felt called to the ministry and started his own church. He was the first pastor of Hutchison Avenue Baptist Church in Charlotte. He started the church in 1939 with only 19 members, and was its last pastor 31 years later when the church folded because of the changing urbanization in the area. He became pastor of Concord Baptist Church in Granite Falls in 1940 and returned to Hutchison Avenue in 1945.
--Even after he retired in 1970, he continued to serve the Charlotte area by becoming an assistant chaplain at Presbyterian Hospital. The Rev. Scott Lindsay, a chaplain at Presbyterian, spoke of how Rev. Roberts would open the chapel in the mornings. "Since he was a widower, he would eat breakfast at the hospital at 5:45 every morning and would talk to the staff. Many people here considered him as their pastor, even though they may go to another church. He performed weddings and other special events for the hospital staff. At the hospital, he helped everyone. Not just people going into surgery, or people on their deathbeds, but also people who were lost or overcome by the hospital."
The Rev. Earnest Glass, pastor at Shamrock Drive Baptist, said: "Rev. Roberts was well liked by everyone who knew him. He often substituted as the minister for other churches in the area, and supplied the pulpit here many times."
--His wife Nora preceded him in death. Survivors include his sons, Bob and Charles Roberts, 2 brothers, 4 sisters, five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
