He was born Caterino Saldivar the youngest of 9 siblings in Bettendorf of Mexican parents who came to work in the Bettendorf Co. They lived in Boxcar City until the city of Bettendorf allowed them to move across the highway into Holy City.
The nuns at Our Lady of Lourdes School in Bettendorf, Scott, IA could not pronounce it and they didn't want any Hispanic influences in the school so he changed his name (no date probably before he was 5yo).
He lied about his age to get a job on the railroad when he was 12-13. He carried pails of water to the railroad track layers and workers.
He was a champion Golden Gloves boxer. A photo of him hangs in the University of Iowa library in Iowa City. He played baseball for many years and coached his children.
He enlisted in the Army and served in Germany in the post-war years.
He married Wanda Marie Lopez in Rock Island in August 1948. She survives him (2010).
They had 8 children: Victor G., Davenport, Victoria Jacobs, Studio City, CA, Gloria, Davenport (deceased), Jose (Joe), Davenport, Lawrence, Dayton, OH, John, Davenport, Nino David, Rock Island, IL. A son, Ronald Joseph, died shortly after birth and is buried with his sister, Gloria, in the baby section.
