John Repp was born in the Volga German colonies in Russia. He emigrated to the US in 1898 with his maternal grandparents. John worked for three and a half years to earn enough to pay for his mother and sister, step father and two half sisters to come to the United States. He married Mary Elizabeth Ochs in LaCrosse, Kansas on November 21st, 1904. Their oldest daughter Katie was born in Alexander, Kansas in 1907. Their second daughter was born in Colorado in 1909. By 1910 they had moved to St. John, where they lived the rest of their lives. John and Mary had eleven children who lived to adulthood. John worked as a laborer for the railroad to support the family until tuberculous made it impossible to continue the work.
