Mr. Perry
Vergel George Perry, Sr., 83, of Lake Jackson, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, at Plantation Health care Center in Lake Jackson.
Services were Friday, Sept. 26, at the First United Methodist Church in Lake Jackson with Rev. Gary Leinhart officiating. Burial was in Restwood Memorial Park under the direction of Lakewood Funeral Chapel.
Mr. Perry was born Jan. 28, 1914, in Nolan County, the son of George Madison and Lillie Dunn Perry. He moved with his family in a covered wagon from west Texas to Hamilton at the age of 8. He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1933 and from Howard Payne College in 1937 with a degree in chemistry. He was married to Anita Crawley in Ranger on Aug. 26, 1939. She preceded him in death. He taught school in Ireland, Gorman and Angleton before joining Dow Chemical in 1942 where he worked in the Central Lab until his retirement in 1980.
Perry and his family were one of the first four families to settle in Lake Jackson and were founding members of the First United Methodist Church there.
Survivors include a son, Vergel Perry and wife Sandra of Lake Jackson; a daughter, Patricia Hatinger of Richardson; four grand-children, Molly Ann Perry of San Angelo, Elizabeth Perry of College Station, Karen Hatinger of Dallas and Kurt Hatinger and wife Shannon of Richardson; a great-granddaughter, Reilly Hatinger; two brothers Jeff Perry and Alven Perry, both of Hamilton; two sisters, Cleo Osterman of Lake Jackson and Katherine Arnold of Hamilton; and many nephews and nieces.
Pallbearers were members of the Men's Sunday School Class at FUMC.
