OBITUARY

Martha E. Adams, daughter of Williamson D. Alexander, was born near Hobbsville in Greene County, Indiana, December 29, 1840, and died January 7, 1927, at the age of 86 years and 8 days. In 1858 she was married to William Ring (sic) to which union was born three children: Mrs. J. W. Ferguson of Devoce, Kas., and two other children who died in infancy. When the Civil War broke out, Mr. Ringer (sic) enlisted in defense of his country and died for it in Ft. Pickering Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. Mrs. Ringer was then united in marriage to Robert W. Alexander, a Civil War veteran. To them were born six children, two of whom are still living, Mrs. Joe Belcher and Mrs. George Rickman, both of this city. After the death of Mr. Alexander, she was married to William L. Adams who was also a veteran of the Civil War. On Sept. 10, 1914, Mrs. Adams was again left a widow since which time she made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Rickman. She was a member of the Paul Slocom Post and of the Indiana Avenue Church of Christ. She was the last member of her father's family and lived to see Bloomington grow from a small village to what it is today. Besides the two daughters, she leaves nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and other more distant relatives and a host of friends to mourn the loss of a good Christian mother in Israel.

Funeral services were conducted from the Indiana Avenue Church of Christ Monday at 2 PM with A. W. Harvey and J. C. Roady in charge. The remains were laid to rest in Rose Hill.

For the most part, the items in the collection had no source or date. Those that were dated seemed to be from the 1920s and 30s. There were several items from the Bloomington (Indiana) Evening World, so perhaps that was her paper of choice. With some effort, it should be possible to determine a generalized time when the item appeared.]
