Dorothy Ruth Stender, 87, a long-time resident of rural Massena, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday afternoon, December 25, 2001 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital.
The daughter of Robert Clayton and Edna Henrietta (Lillibridge) Barton, she was born September 27, 1914 in Clarion, Iowa. She was raised and attended school in Spencer, Iowa, graduating with the Spencer High School class of 1934. After graduation, she attended beauty school in Sioux City, Iowa and became a beautician in Atlantic, Iowa where she met John. On January 14, 1940, she married John Stender of Massena where they lived and farmed. In 1949 they moved to Adel, Iowa and farmed for two years then returned to the Stender farm at Massena. She had been married to John for 43 years when he passed away in 1983. She wintered in Texas for 20 years. She enjoyed playing the piano, gardening, painting, reading and especially her grandchildren.
