Ernest Stender, 43, Dies

MASSENA - Ernest Stender, 43, Massena farmer, died Sunday at Cass County Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb. 1, 1939 at Iowa City, the son of John and Dorothy Barton Stender and was married Feb. 21, 1960 to Shirley Wallace. He had farmed here since 1963. Surviving besides his wife are two sons, Anthony of Massena and Ricky of Graham, Texas, his parents, Mr and Mrs. John Stender of Cumberland, two brothers, Arlo of Cumberland and Kent of Massena, and a sister, Karen Oathoudt of Anita. Visitation will be held from 7-8 p.m Tuesday at the Massena Funeral Chapel and rites will be held at 2 p.m Wednesday at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church at Wiota Burial will be in the Massena Center Cemetery.

Rites Held For Ernest Stender

Funeral services were held for Ernest Stender on Wednesday, December 8, 1982 at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wiota, with Pastor Paul Knittel officiating. Casket bearers were Stan Schrier, Carl Warnaca, Varel Schmidt, Ed Sweeney, Dale Langfelt, and Ralph Wickey. Honorary bearers were Dick Sherley, Dennis Brown, Harold Sweeney, Bill Behnken, Merle Thompson, Stanley Simons, Charles Spieker, George Marnin, Keith Mehlmann, Wendell Muller, Darrell Krause, Arnold Edwards, LeRoy Mehlman, Albert Warnaca, and Mike Eversole. Flower bearers were Lila Behnken, Letha Martens, Mary Thompson, and Esther Krause. Music was by Janet Steffens, organist, who played "Beyond the Sunset" and "In the Garden." Interment was in Massena Center Cemetery, Massena. The Massena Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements. Lunch was served at the church following interment.

Ernest John Stender, the oldest son of John and Dorothy Barton Stender was born on February 4, 1939 at Iowa City, Iowa and he entered into rest at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, Iowa on December 5, 1982 at the age of 43 years, 10 months and 1 day.

On February 21, 1960 he was united in marriage to Shirley Wallace at the Congregational Church at Zion, Iowa. This union was blessed with the birth of two sons, Anthony Lee and Ricky Lynn. The couple made their home in Adair County for three years, and have resided near Massena since March of 1963.

Those surviving to honor his memory are his loving wife, Shirley, of Massena; sons, Tony of Massena and Ricky of Graham, Texas; his parents, John and Dorothy Stender of Massena, Iowa, one sister, Karen Oathoudt, and her husband Dennis, of Anita, Iowa, and by their children, Terry, Krista, John Robert, and Jason; two brothers, Arlo Stender and his wife, Mary of Cumberland, Iowa and their children, Jennifer and John Stender and Julie (Mrs. Curt) Symonds; and Kent Stender and his wife, Julia of Massena, and their children, Kevin, Tamela, Rachel, and Rana. Also surviving are his mother and father-in-law, Orlo and Adaline Wallace of Orient, Iowa; and by a brother-in-law, Richard Wallace and his wife, Donna, and their two children, Dennell and Douglas, all of whom live in Orient.

He will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, friend and neighbor. Ernest was well known in the community through his association with the Massena Little Britches Rodeo, the Ponderosa Playboy Saddle Club, the Massena Fire Department, and his beloved hobby of racing "56 Jr."

Wallace-Stender Wedding Held At Orient

In a double ring ceremony solemnized at 2:30 Sunday afternoon, Feb. 21, at the Hill of Zion Congregational church at Orient, Shirley Wallace, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Orlo E. Wallace of Orient, and Ernest Stender, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Stender of Massena, were united in marriage by the Rev. Penn S. Chambers. Mrs.
Kenneth Hoepker accompanied Mrs. Jerry White of Indianola who sang "God Gave Me You" and "True Love.''

Given in marriage by her father, the bride wore a gown of imported Rochelle lace. The lace bouffant skirt swept into a chapel train and the pointed fitted bodice had a round neckline trimmed with floral medallions centered with iridescent sequins and the pointed sleeves were long. Her fingertip veil was attached to a crown of pearls and her bouquet was a large lavender orchid on a white Bible covered with lace, a gift from her grandparents. Her pearl necklace was a gift of the bridegroom. Sharon Gaidies of Creston, cousin of the bride, was maid of honor and wore a ballerina length dress in lavender lace over taffeta. Her dress featured a flared skirt and a fitted bodice with a round neckline and was trimmed with bands of satin and small bows. She wore a matching hat with a circular veil and her bouquet was of white
carnations with lavender ribbons.

Richard Mingus of Spencer, a cousin, was best man and Richard Wallace and Arlo Stender, brothers
of the bride and bridegroom, and Harold Williams served as ushers. Karen and Kent Stender, sister and
brother of the bridegroom, were candlelighters.

Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the church parlors with Mrs. Bert Linthicum and Mrs. Claire Green as dining room hostesses. The four-tier cake was cut by Mrs. Ilarold Eivins of Indianola assisted by Mrs. John Peckham of Macksburg. Mrs. Gene Stewart of Greenfield presided at the coffee server and Mrs. John Gaidies of Creston served the punch. All are aunts of the bride.

Mrs. Larry Tuttle of Granger and Karel Kobodt of Des Moines took care of the gifts and Mrs. Harold Williams of Creston registered the guests. Kitchen committee members were Mmes. Bill Butcher, Gale McKinney, Mahlon Oxley, Wayne Sheriff, Creola Blackwell, Alvin Fulton and Glen Weaver.

Mrs. Stender, a 1958 graduate of the Zion consolidated school, had been employed at Allied Mutual Casualty Company in Des Moines the past 21 months. Mr. Stender is associated with his father in farming. After a honeymoon trip, the couple will be at home on a farm six miles east and one mile north of Orient.

Guests attended the wedding from Orient, Creston, Des Moines, Granger, St. Charles, Cumberland, Massena, Spencer, Logan, Atlantic, Macksburg, Bridgewater, Omaha, Kansas City, Indianola, Adel, Lewis, Marne, Red Oak, Murray, Walnut, Cedar Rapids, Corning, Greenfield and Peoria, Illinois.
