MN--Osakis Review...06 Feb 1902
CHARLES LEMUEL BETTS-37: Osakis; The body of Lemuel Betts cold in death was found about 3mi up the lake about noon last Sun by the Schultz brothers of Leslie while on their way to Osakis. People here were at once notified & Officer Plank, DrGilkinson, Charley Millard, S Housen, George Herberger & Chas Sargent left immediately for the scene. The body was at once identified as that of Lemuel Betts. He was found near the main road lying on his overcoat & frozen stiff. Death had occurred several hours previous. The remains were taken to Lyons undertaking rooms.
The unfortunate man, together with his bro-in-law CharlesClark & the latter's father had a camp on the old Will Johnson farm near BattlePoint 6mi up the lake where they have been cutting wood this winter. The 3 drove to Osakis along in the afternoon, about 6PM the Clarks were ready to return to camp. MrBetts, who had been drinking was reluctant about leaving, but was finally induced to get into the sleigh. After reaching Peterson Blacksmith Shop on LakeSt, Betts discovered that he had left his overcoat & said he would go back after it. After waiting in the cold an hour for the return of Betts, Charles Clark ran back to town. He succeeded in finding Betts but was told that he(Betts) would not go to camp that night but would stay at King Clark's in town. The 2 Clarks then started home. About 7pm Betts was seen by MrSteindl with his overcoat thrown over his arm passing the blacksmith shop on his way to the lake. He appeared to be talking to himself & was more or less under the influence of liquor, though Able to walk straight. This was the last that was seen of him alive. He doubtless started on the right road to camp & when abt 3mi up the lake became exhausted & drowsy & laid down to rest using his overcoat for a pillow. He fell asleep & never awoke. Betts was seen by Officer Plank about 6:30PM & though he had been drinking MrPlank did not notice that he was intoxicated.
Lemuel Betts was 37yrs of age & leaves a wife & 2 small children. He was a stone mason by trade. He also leaves a father Wm Betts & several bros living here. The funeral was held Tues from the home of William Betts. Burial was made in Lakeside Cem-Osakis.
