WILLIAM BETTS--95: died Saturday [7-01] at his home in this village [Osakis] following an illness of about a year, most of which time he was confined to the home. Death was due to diabetes & infirmities incident to old age. Mr Betts was one of the oldest residents of this section of the country & was 44 years of age when mustered out of the army in 1866. This would make him in his 96th year at the time of his death. William Betts was born in 1821-OH. He came to MN in 1854, locating in ScottCnty. Four years later he married Miss Rebecca Ross at Hutchinson MN. The family moved to Osakis about 30yrs ago & bought a farm adjoining the village. Abt 17yrs ago the old gentleman sold the farm; bought a small piece of land in Todd Cnty inside the village limits. Owing to his ad-vanced years, he sold this place a few years later & built a comfortable home in town where he lived at the time of his death.
Betts is survived by his aged wife, now nearly 80yrs of age & 7 childen as follows: GeorgeH-Minneapls; Samuel-Brainerd; John-Todd Cnty; MrsCharles Clark-Osakis; Wm Betts-Thief River Falls; MrsWm Payne-Osakis; Walter Betts-Long Prairie. Five other children were born to Mr-Mrs Betts: Lem Betts met a tragic death several years ago by freezing on OsakisLake; MrsJohn Lennon & MrsKing Clark passed away at their homes in Osakis. The other son & dau died in infancy. MrBetts enlisted in the 2nd MN Vol Infantry at FtSnelling in 1864 & served until he was mustered out at the end of the war.
The funeral was held Monday [7-03] from the home, RevEdward Kaneen-Methodist Episcopal Church officiated. The home&yard were crow-ded with old friends & neighbors who gathered to pay their last respects to the memory of an old soldier & pioneer. All the children were pre-sent at the funeral except Sam & Wm BettsJr. Burial was made at Lakeside Cem-Osakis.
