Elias Steen was a son of Thomas Steen and his wife Elizabeth Hollifield. His paternal grandparents were James Steen and his wife Jane Graham, and his maternal grandfather was Jacob Hollifield. His great grandfather was Lt. Col. James Steen, a Soldier of the Revolution who died at the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780.

Elias married Ellen (Eleanor?) Taylor, a daughter of William Taylor and his wife Sarah McLendon, of Anson County, North Carolina. Elias' brother, Joseph Steen, had married Elizabeth Ann Taylor, Ellen's older sister; and another Steen brother, James Samuel, married Louisa Taylor, a first cousin of Elizabeth and Ellen.

I am still attempting to compile a complete list of the children of Elias Steen and Ellen Taylor, but I have gaps. The children I have for them so far are: John Jackson Steen (1848-1906, m. Eliza C. Sellers, 2nd. m. Sarah Frances Sellers), William A. Steen (1849-1916, m. Laura E. Maske), Nancy Adeline Steen (c.1852-c.1917, m. Nathan Gibson), Mary "Polly" Steen (c.1852-?), James G. Steen (1855-1928, m. Lucy Jordan), Sarah Steen (c.1859-?) and Isaac Nicholas "Nick" Steen (1861-1941, m. Catherine A. Allen, 2nd. m. Nancy Jane Gulledge).

Many thanks to Julious Burr who originally created this memorial and kindly transferred it to me.
