James Samuel Steen was a son of Thomas Steen and his wife Elizabeth Hollifield, of Chesterfield County, SC. His paternal grandparents were James Steen and his wife Jane Graham, and his maternal grandfather was Jacob Hollifield. His great grandfather was Lt. Col. James Steen, a Soldier of the Revolution who died at the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780.

James married Louisa Taylor (c.1825-c.1857/9), a daughter of Thomas Taylor and his wife Charlotte Spivey, of Anson County, NC. James' brothers, Joseph and Elias, had married Louisa's first cousins. Joseph married Elizabeth Ann Taylor and Elias married Ellen Taylor, daughters of Louisa's uncle William Taylor.

James and Louisa had four children: Ann Jane Steen (1847-1940, m. Hardy Huntley Oliver), Elizabeth Charlotte Steen (1848-1920, m. Thomas F. Melton), Peter G. Steen (1853/5-1913, m. Lovedy Ann Jordan) and William Marshall Steen (c. 1857-?). After his wife Louisa's death, James married Mahalia Jackson, and they had two more sons, Humore M. Steen (1860-1920, m. Sarah Lucy Hancock) and Albert Luther Steen (1864-1918, m. Sarah Joplin).

James served in the famous Hampton's South Carolina Legion of the Confederate States Army, and died in service of his country in the winter of 1864/5.

The original of this memorial was created by the late Jim Rogers, a descendant. After his passing, it was transferred to Julious Burr, who kindly transferred it to me. (I am kin to the Taylor ladies who married the Steens.)

Original memorial as created by Jim Rogers: "James S. Steen son of Thomas and Elizabeth Hollifield Steen, Husband to Louisa Taylor Steen and Mahala Jackson Steen. Died as a CSA soldier, Company K, Infantry Regiment, South Carolina Volunteers(Hampton Legion). James is buried at White Plains Cemetery. This CSA grave marker was placed at Cross Roads Baptist Church Cemetery by his grandaughter, Ida Oliver."
