Catherine's parents, Helen and Dougal, had seven children, all of which were put into foster homes at one point in their lives. Dougal was an alcholic and Helen suffered from a mental illness which progressively worsend after each childbirth. The oldest of the children was Jessie and she raised four of the seven when she was old enough to do so. The two youngest children were adopted by the foster parents and took different names.
Catherine was raised by her foster parents, John Coover Hauck and De Leo Estelle Palmer Hauck, but was not adopted by them. John and De Leo played a big role in Catherine's life where she named her kids after the foster parents in honor of them. Catherine and Russell's son Coover Barnard was named after Catherine's foster father John whereas their twin daughters, Laura and Lola's middle names are derivatives of Catherine's foster mother's name which are DeLeo and Deloris respectfully.
