A lifetime county resident, James graduated from barber school in Seattle and for more than 40 years operated a barbershop in Sumas, where he also operated a sporting goods store. He attended Sumas Advent Christian Church and for many years was a member of the Sumas Volunteer Fire Department. He also was a member of the former Sumas Masonic Lodge, was active at the Sumas Senior Center and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
