Johnnie was the 4th son born to George and Rosetta Pearce. Sometime after the death of his father in 1913, his mother moved the family back to Texas where she met and married Wylie Armstrong in 1921. In approximately 1926 he married Pauline Thomas, the oldest child of Albert Gentry and Willie Pevey Thomas.

He and Pauline had 6 children; Arnold Lee, Daisy Louise, Willie Rosetta, Lillian Juanita, Brenda Beth, and Sharon "Sherry" Ann. Daisy died not long after her 5th birthday, before the birth of Willie. Sometime prior to 1940 he moved the family to Dallas where he found employment with the City of Dallas, Water Department, where he continued to work until his death in 1974. He and Pauline were members of the Hampton Road Church of Christ.

In 1950 Pauline succumbed to a malignant brain tumor and Johnnie took her back to East Texas for burial in Providence Cementery next to their daughter, Daisy. In the summer of 1951 he took the 2 younger children, Brenda and Sherry to his mother's to live. He remained in Dallas the rest of his life.

In March of 1954 he married Mamie Agnes and they had 3 more children; Johnnie Sue, Stephen Glenn and Debra. This marriage was a troubled one until he divorced Agnes in 1970.

From Oct 1971 until the relationship ended in divorce in Jan 1972, he was briefly married to a woman named Noma T David. Most of the family knew nothing of this marriage until his death in Oct 1974. His older children took him back to East Texas where he was buried next to Pauline and Daisy in Providence Cemetery.
