Michael was born in Cayuga Twp., Haldimand County, Ontario, the son of Michael and Margaret Flynn-Gormley (Gormly). Contrary to his obit and tombstone, Michael was most likely born in 1853 as his name is not listed in the 1851 Canadian Census (enumerated Jan 12, 1852). His obit also lists Perth County, Ontario as his place of birth but the family remained in Haldimand County and buried son, Peter, there on Nov. 16, 1853. The family did move to Hibbert Twp., Perth County, Ontario in early 1854 and are shown living there in the 1861 Canadian Census. In 1866, the family moved to Metamora Twp., Lapeer County, Michigan. There Michael met and married Eliza Kane on Nov. 18, 1879. He worked on his father's farm and moved to homestead a farm in Arcadia Twp, Lapeer County, in 1886. Michael and Eliza raised 4 children (Margaret, Katherine, Peter and Emma). Eliza died on Sept. 27, 1922 and Michael followed her 18 years later.
