James married Amanda Boor on April 18, 1872, at Continental, Putnam County, Ohio. Amanda was born in 1850 in Ohio and was the daughter and youngest child of Michael and Caroline Berentz Boor of Pennsylvania. Amanda was a school teacher in a school house 13 miles north of Agra. Her teacher's certificate expired on January 31, 1885. Amanda Brower died in August of 1931 in Glade, Kansas, and was buried in the Kirwin Cemetery, Kirwin, KS.
