Family History

On February 22, 1847, James Wilson Brower was born in Ottawa, Putnam County, Ohio. His parents were Hoadley Manford Brower and Lydia Ann Crow Brower. He was the grandson of Mansfield and Carolyn Staley Brower.

James married Amanda Boor on April 18, 1872, at Continental, Putnam County, Ohio. Amanda was born in 1850 in Ohio and was the daughter and youngest child of Michael and Caroline Berentz Boor. Amanda was a school teacher in a school house 13 miles north of Agra. Her teacher's certificate expired on January 31, 1885. Amanda Brower died in August of 1931 in Glade, Kansas, and was buried in the Kirwin Cemetery, Kirwin, KS.

James Wilson Brower was a Civil War veteran. He was enrolled on June 15, 1863, and discharged March 4, 1864.

James and Amanda settled in Phillips County, Kansas, in 1884, movin from Ohio with their six children. The children are:

Rufus Keck was born in Defiance, Ohio, on February 4, 1873. He married Sadie Moorse. Rufus died on March 2, 1913, in Nebraska.

Joyce was born on August 11, 1874, in Defiance, Ohio. She married George Smith. Joyce died in November 1909 in Glade, Kansas.

Centennial Boor was born on June 14, 1876, in Defiance, Ohio. He was married twice. One marriage was to Mattie Wisehart and the other marriage was to Orpha Weaver. Centennial died on February 3, 1966, at Logan, KS. His Findagrave number is 28480886. He is buried in the Fairview Cemetery, in Phillipsburg, KS with his second wife, Orpha. Centennial Brower died February 3, 1966. Orpha was born Nov. 20, 1885 and died Jun. 26, 1950. She is also buried in the Fairview Cemetery in Phillipsburg, KS.

Wright J. was born on July 8, 1878, at Defiance, Ohio. He married Octavia Platt. Wright died on September 6, 1924, at Glade, Kansas.

Michael Hoadley was born on October 11, 1883, in Eldon, Ohio. He married Edith Wisehart. Michael died on February 12, 1912, in Norton, Kansas.

Lydia Caroline was the twin of Michael and born on October 11, 1883, in Eldon, Ohio. She married John Rigg. Lydia died on May 7, 1972, in Norton, Kansas.

James Wilson Brower was born near Ottawa, Putnam county, Ohio, February 22, 1847, and departed this life at St. Anthony Hospital at Hays, Kansas, May 31st, 1935, at 12:25 o'clock. Being at the time of death 88 years, 3 months, and 9 days of age.

He was a Civil War veteran, having served in Company G, 12th Ohio Cavalry for 19 months. Being transferred at Knoxville, Tennessee, to the 129th Ohio Infantry serving eight months. During which time he marched with Sherman to the sea. He was honorably discharged at the close of the war at Cleveland, Ohio, being present when the white flag was raised.

While the masterminds of the nation, as Washington, Jefferson, and others, had expressed their disapproval of slavery, it remained for the Boys in Blue to rid our fair land of that dreadful curse. Not only the heads of his loved ones but those of the nation should bow at his passing.

At different times in his life he was employed in machine shops and factories.

He was united in marriage to Amanda Boer at Defiance, Ohio, April 18, 1872. Six children blessed this home. Those preceding the father in death were Rufus of Rollwitz, Nebraska, Mrs. Joyce Smith of Wright and Michael of Glade, Kansas. Those surviving him are C. R. Brower of Glade and Mrs. Carrie Rigg of Lenora, Kansas.

During these years he was converted and joined the Christian Church. In 1884 they moved to Kansas, homesteading 13 miles north of Agra where he was engaged in farming and stock raising. In 1893 they moved to Kirwin and in 1917 to Glade where he resided until his death. His wife passed to her eternal home on July 18, 1931, after her death he made his home with his children. He dearly loved his family and his home and made friends with all with whom he came in contact. He leaves to mourn two children, eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren one sister, Mrs. Elmira Ernest, Bowling Green, Ohio, and one brother, Daniel Brower of Marion, Indiana.

Services were held at Glade at 2:30 p.m. Monday. Rev. Campbell, the Methodist minister of Phillipsburg officiated. Interment was made in the Kirwin Cemetery.
