STUARTS DRAFT - Luther Gorman "Pug" Allen, 85, of Route 1, Stuarts Draft, died at 9:45 a.m. Sunday (June 8, 1986) in his residence.
He was born Feb. 1, 1901, in Nelson County, a son of Andrew J. Allen and Jenny (Hamilton) Allen. He spent his life in Nelson, Bedford and Augusta counties, where he engaged in farming, timber and real estate.
He was a life-long member of Mt. Paran Baptist Church.
Pug was known for his traditional Appalachia folk-style music. He had participated in folk music seminars including a nationally known seminar held in Piney Woods, Mass. He also appeared on the cover of "Appalachia, The Old Tradition Blue Ridge Mountain Music from Virginia and North Carolina, Volume II." This album was produced and recorded in England by Mike Yates. He was also well known in the state blue grass circles. He appeared on various television and radio programs. Some of his music is preserved in the National Archives in Washington, D.C.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mrs. Mattie (Hatter) Allen; three daughters, Mrs. Agnes (Allen) Coffey of Staunton, Mrs. Irene (Allen) Tatro of Mt. Crawford and Mrs. Hazel (Allen) Mann of Staunton; three sons, Gorman L. Allen and George H. Allen, both of Stuarts Draft, and James E. Allen of Waynesboro; one sister, Mrs. Hattie (Allen) Grant of Greenville; a half sister, Lucille Allen of Houston, Texas; 14 grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Gertrude Marie Allen, and one son, Buddy Ross Allen.
A service will be conducted 11 a.m. Tuesday in the Stuarts Draft chapel of Etter Funeral Home by the Rev. Judson D. Baldwin. Burial will follow in Calvary United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Active pallbearers will be Glen Allen, Dave Thomas, Butch Allen, Dale Allen, Everett Allen and Manley Allen.
Honorary pallbearers will be Don Taylor, Sonny Taylor, Ed Weaver, Earl Fitzgerald, Dr. Dennis Hatter and his grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 tonight in the funeral home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Stuarts Draft Rescue Squad.
