Helen Hazel Stephens, 81, of LaGrange, Mo., died May 20, 1999, at the home of her son Bill Stephens in Columbia. Born Sept. 13, 1917, in Clark County near St. Patrick, she was a daughter of George William and Lucy Jane Simpson Ellison, Jr. She married Roy Lee Stephens Aug. 10, 1940, he preceded her in death April 24, 1995. Mrs. Stephens was a graduate of Canton High School in May 1937, worked in Keokuk, Iowa, and Quincy, Ill., until she married in 1940. She was a member of Notre Dame Catholic Church in LaGrange. Survivors include one daughter Mrs. Joseph (Carolyn Jane) Marshall of Circle Pines, Minnesota; one son William Mark Stephens of Columbia; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Robert Leo Ellison of LaGrange, and Howard Joseph Ellison of Canton; and one sister Anna Muriel Ellison Kolthoff of LaGrange. She was also preceded in death by four sisters, Mary Patricia Ellison, Ruby Theresa Ellison, Hilda Elizabeth Logsdon, and Louise Hennrietta Solter; and four brothers, Patrick Eugene, Paul William, George Arnold and Harold Martin Ellison. The funeral Mass was held Monday, May 24, at 10 a.m., at Notre Dame Catholic Church, LaGrange, with Fr. Tom Alber and Br. John Francis Tyrrell officiating. A prayer service was held Sunday, May 23, at 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Davis Funeral Home handled arrangements. Pallbearers were Jerry Logsdon, Danny Logsdon, Larry Ellison, Kevin Ellison, Francis Ellison and Lance Solter. Interment was in Dover Cemetery near LaGrange.
