Texana Dodd was so named for the fact that she was born in a prairie schooner on the Texas /Louisiana boarder, June 10, 1879, while her parents were migrating to the state. Her parents were William and Melissa Jones Dodd of Georgia. Texana married James Leonard "Jim" Mayfield on June 21, 1896, in Henderson County and they later settled in Kaufman County and raised nine children. The couple were successful farmers and good neighbors. Texana or "Texaner" as she was known by her family, died on November 8, 1934. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and six infants. Surviving children are Essie Mae, George Archie,James Albert, Ethel Marie, Clifton, Izora, Troy, LeeRoy and Myrtle Louise.

The following was taken from the Terrell Tribune dated November 9, 1934: Friday

Mrs. Texana Mayfield died Thursday and will be buried Friday in morrow's Chapel cemetery. She was the widow of the late J. L. Mayfield, a native Texan, born June 10, 1879. She is survived by nine children: James, George, Clifton, Leroy and Troy Mayfield, Mrs. Bennie Barton, Mrs. Robert Taylor, Mrs. Woodrow Lightfoot and Miss Myrtle Mayfield; one sister Mrs. Callie Nichols of Glenrose, Texas; five brothers, Arch, King, Boliver and Asia Dodd. She was a member of the Church of Christ.
