She was born June 13, 1914 in the town of Easton to the late R. Grant and Emma (Retzlaff) Merriam.
On June 13, 1936, Mabel was united in marriage to Gerrit Vlietstra in Birnamwood. He preceded her in death on September 8, 1989.
Mabel attended Forestville school in the town of Easton. After marriage, she was a homemaker and later was employed at the Wausau Trim Shop, where she worked as a seamstress, retiring in 1981. Mabel wrote and had her autobiography published. She was a member of the Seasoned Saints of New Hope Community Church, was active in church activities and loved being with family, friends, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by three sons, Robert (Clara) Vlietstra, Kalamazoo, MI, Jack (Karen) Vlietstra, Ringle, Jim (Diann) Vlietstra, Birnamwood; one daughter Sharon (Bruce) Jensema, Marshfield; 11 grandchildren, Nathan (Peg) Vlietstra, Stacey (Brandon) Beebe, Gary Vlietstra, Jeff Vlietstra, Paul (Michelle) Vlietstra, Sally Vlietstra, Randy (Darlene) Vlietstra, Kathy (Ken) Szews, Mark Vlietstra, SuAnn (Bryan) Reickman, Kristin Jensema; ten great-grandchildren, Cameron, Donovan, Gerrit, Ryan, Steve, Amber, Kyle, Sara, Kody, Gus; one sister, Mrs. Emily (Richard) Bultman; two sisters-in-law, Gertrude Fraaza, Edith Merriam and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Gary Dale, a brother Melvin Merriam, a brother in infancy and one sister, June Te Paske Wilcox.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00AM on Saturday, June 9, 2007 at New Hope Community Church, town of Easton. Brandon Beebe will officiate. Interment will be in Forestville Cemetery, town of Easton. Friends may call on Friday at Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home, Birnamwood from 4pm until 8:30pm and again on Saturday from 10am until the time of services at the church. Memorials may be made to Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice.
