Ref: The Nauvoo Independent, Nauvoo, IL, 28 Jan. 1903 -- Mrs. Sarah E. Barnard died of bronchitis, Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m. at her home 2 1/2 miles southeast of Powellton, after an illness of 3 weeks, aged about 70.

Deceased was an old settler of this county having resided in this vicinity for more than 50 years. Her husband, Heman Barnard died about 10 years ago. She was Mother of 14 children of whom 4 sons and 8 daughters survive, namely, Mrs. Ella Weber, John E. Barnard, Mrs. Kate Harmon, Frank W. Barnard, Eva LeClare, Mrs. Henry Long, Lucia Golden, Verna Bolton, Ferdinand Barnard, Mrs. Carrie Wilson, all of this county and Mrs. Ben Gehle of Sawyer, IA.

Mrs. Barnard was a lady of amiable, loving character, a kind and loving Mother and most excellent neighbor. The funeral will be held from her late home at one this p.m. Services will be conducted by Wm. Lambert and the remains will be interred in the Powellton Cemetery.
