Captain Robert Carruthers, one of Astoria's pioneer residents, died suddenly about 10:30 this morning as the result of a stroke of apoplexy. He had been about the streets this morning and apparently in his accustomed good health. While returning from the Astoria Fuel & Supply Company's office he stopped at the residence of George Bryant, at the corner of 5th and Bond streets, and fell dead while sitting in a chair and conversing with Mr. Bryant. The deceased was a native of Canada, 74 years of age and had resided on the coast for many years, first at Shoalwater Bay and then in Astoria, where he owned large property interests. He left a widow and five children. The latter are Robert R., Richard E. and Angus R. Carruthers, Mrs. Carlton Allen, of this city, and Mrs. W. W. Ridehalgh of Portland.
