Astoria, Or., Dec. 9-Mrs. Mary Caruthers, who died at Oysterville, Pacific county, Wash., December 4, was a notable character among the pioneers of the Pacific coast and one of those sturdy true women who have assisted in building the Northwest. At the time of her death, she had 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren living.
She was born in Westmoreland, England, May 22, 1816. Accompanying her parents, she sailed from Liverpool May 5, 1837, on the ship New Caledonia, and arrived at New York after a passage of seven weeks and three days. With her family she removed to Canada, where she married the late Richard Carruthers on October 1, 1838 at Home District, Ontario, Canada. From there they removed to Booneville, Mo., where they resided until 1852, when they crossed the plains and reached Pacific county, Washington in 1854. There they spent the remainder of their lives. Seven children survive her, and they are: Mrs. Sarah Hunter, of Ilwaco, Wash; Mrs Mary Wood and Robert Caruthers of Astoria: Mrs. Elizabeth Crafts, Mrs Sophia Harris and Mrs Maria Malcom of Seattle, and W.A. Carruthers, of Oysterville, Wash.
