Retired USN Cmdr. Boyd Shreve Brooks, a native of Poolesville, died of a heart attack on Memorial Day at Bethesda Naval Hospital. Two days later, his wife of 55 years, Marie Angell Brooks, 78, died as a result of a cerebral hemorrhage.

A graduate of Poolesville High School, the 80-year-old commander was to have attended the school's annual outing this weekend. His father, Lewis Brooks, was a well-known veterinarian in Poolesville.

Cmdr. Brooks graduated from Johns Hopkins School of Engineering and then entered the Navy. He served at the David Taylor Model Basin during the 1940s and later was the officer in charge of a construction battalion on Guam and Wake Islands during World War II.

After his retirement, he became an engineering consultant.

Cmdr. Brooks is survived by two sisters, Elsie Moore and Beulah Brubaker, both of Bethesda.

Friends may call at the Hines Rinaldi Funeral Home, 11800 New Hampshire Ave., Silver Spring, on Saturday, June 4, and Sunday, June 5, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services and burial with full military honors will take place at Arlington National Cemetery at 2 p.m. Monday, June 6.
