Michael J. Casanova, 97, of Norway, died Monday, June 18, 2001, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, Michigan. He was born on Thursday, December 10, 1903, in Norway, Michigan to Francesco Nicolo "Frank" and Barbara (nee Morosini) Casanova.

Michael worked for Ford Motor Company in Kingsford, Michigan, the local iron mines, steel construction and then for Construction & General Laborers Union 1329 AFL-CIO of Iron Mountain, Michigan.

He married the former Victoria A. Cieslak on June 22, 1929, in Vulcan, Michigan. They were married fifty-four years at the time of Victoria's passing on August 22, 1984. Michael was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Norway.

He was survived by three sons, Wallace Michael Casanova of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, Donald Charles (Janet) and Roger Victor (Judy), both of Norway, Michigan; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Rose Mary Paquette of Norway, Michigan; a brother-in-law, Louis Edward "Brow" VanLaere of Norway, Michigan; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by four sisters, Louise V. Kurtz, Barbara Wilson, Anna J. Larson and Amelia B. VanLaere; and three brothers, Charles, Frank P., Jr. and Ernest A. Casanova.

Visitation was held Thursday, June 21, 2001, from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at the Miner Funeral Home, 618 Norway Street, Norway, Michigan. Following the visitation, prayers were recited at 10:30 a.m. at the funeral home. Father Joseph O. Gouin celebrated the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Thursday, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 401 Main Street, Norway, Michigan. Burial followed in the Norway Township Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the St. Mary Church Memorial Fund.
