Mrs. Maria Backhaus, one of the pioneer residents of Kiel, passed away at her home on Calumet Avenue on Sunday afternoon, at the age of 83 years and 10 days. Death came as a relief to her after 40 years’ suffering with rheumatism.
The deceased was born May 2, 1838 in Germany and came to America in 1872, locating in Sheboygan County. In 1874 she was married to Christian Backhaus, a widower with six children and lived on a farm in the town of Rhine for six years. Forty years ago the family moved to Kiel, where she has since resided.
Her husband preceded her in death, May 17, 1920.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Adolph Warnke and six step-children, namely Louis in Kiel, William in the town of Herman, Henry in the Town of Rhine, Mrs. John Voigt in Kiel, Mrs. Otto Dedering in New Holstein and Mrs. F. Luedke in Two Rivers.
The funeral took place Wednesday afternoon, from the home with services in the Reformed church, Rev. W. Rech officiating. Interment was in the family lot in the Rockville Cemetery.
