C.J. Rumsey, Merchant 50 Years, Dies
Long Prominent in Business, Civic, Philanthropic, Fraternal and Educational Interests –
Ill Short Time – Was President of Ithaca

Charles J. Rumsey, president of C.J. Rumsey & Co., for more than half a century one of Ithaca's prominent hardware merchants, and active in civic affairs, died at 6 o'clock this morning at his home, 310 West State Street, after a brief illness. He was about 80 years old.

Born on the farm of his father, James Rumsey, one of the early settlers in the Town of Enfield, Charles Rumsey attended the district school and the Ithaca Academy, and worked on the farm. In 1870 he came to Ithaca and entered the hardware store of his brother, John Rumsey, where, after serving as a clerk for seven years, he became a third partner in 1877. Three years later the firm name became C.J. Rumsey & Co. Edwin Gillette and Edgar M. Finch entered the business at that time, but the latter retired in 1883.

President of Village

Aside from the business to which he devoted so much time and energy, Mr. Rumsey had many other interests – civic, philanthropic, and recreational. He served as president of Ithaca for three terms, from 1883-1885, being elected on the Democratic ticket.

He was also active as a member of Eureka Fire Company No. 4, and at the time of his death was a member of the Protective Police, and the Veteran Fireman's Association.

One of his last public appearances was at the annual meeting of the Cornell Library Association on December 20, when he read his report as treasurer of the association, an office which he had held for many years. He had been a trustee for an even longer period of time, and custodian of the John Rumsey fund, left to the library by his brother.

Gave Dental Clinic

For the past 10 years the John C. Rumsey Dental Clinic has been serving the school children of Ithaca. It was equipped in 1917 by Charles J. Rumsey as a memorial to his son, John C. Rumsey, who lost his life as a fireman in the Chi Psi fire. C.J. Rumsey was a member of the Board of Education for six years.

Mr. Rumsey was an Odd Fellow, a member, past master and trustee of Fidelity Lodge, F. and A. Masons, and a member of St. Augustine Commandery, Knights Templar. He was a director of the First National Bank. Mr. Rumsey was also an early stockholder of the Remington Salt Company.

In 1881 Charles J. Rumsey married Sarah Cooper, a daughter of John Cooper of Catharine, Schuyler County, who survives him. He also leaves one son, Lawrence C. Rumsey, and a brother, Burr Rumsey.

A private funeral will be held at 4 o'clock Monday afternoon, January 2, at the home. Rev. B.F. Toby of Danby will officiate. Interment will be in the City Cemetery.
